PARTY:-VCK
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), also known as the Liberation Panthers Party, is a prominent Dalit-centered political party in Tamil Nadu, India. It originated as a social movement – the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) – in the 1980s aiming to combat caste-based discrimination and promote social justice for marginalized communities. The party was formally established in 1990 and is led by Thol. Thirumavalavan, a lawyer and political leader known for his vocal stance against caste oppression.
VCK’s ideology includes the abolition of the Hindu caste system and the promotion of equality among scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, Other Backward Classes, and minorities like Christians and Muslims in Tamil Nadu. It also emphasizes Tamil nationalism and has been a vocal supporter of Tamil Eelam and Sri Lankan Tamils' rights, often criticizing alleged war crimes during the Sri Lankan civil war.
While historically a social movement, VCK transitioned into electoral politics in 1999. It has gained recognition as a state party in Tamil Nadu as of 2025, winning legislative assembly seats and parliamentary representation, making it a key constituent of the DMK-led alliance. The party's election symbol is the "pot," and it actively campaigns against caste domination, capitalism, and Brahminism, advocating social justice, and economic empowerment for the Dalits and other oppressed groups.
VCK has also been actively involved in opposing government liquor shops (TASMAC) and continues to fight for the political rights and dignity of Dalits within Tamil Nadu’s diverse social fabric.
