PARTY:-PMK
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is a regional political party in Tamil Nadu, India, founded by Dr. S. Ramadoss on July 16, 1989. It emerged from the Vanniyar Sangam movement, which was focused on advocating for the Vanniyar caste, a significant community in northern Tamil Nadu. The party was established to provide political representation for the Vanniyars and has since become a notable player in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
PMK's ideology revolves around caste-based identity politics, focusing primarily on the welfare and empowerment of the Vanniyar community. The party has had a significant influence on state and national politics, often playing a kingmaker role in coalition governments. It has allied with various major political coalitions, including the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at different times.
The party's election symbol is a mango, and its colors are blue, yellow, and red. Despite its political success, PMK has been associated with episodes of violence and caste-related conflicts, drawing criticism from other political leaders. In recent years, leadership conflicts have led to a split, with Dr. S. Ramadoss and his son Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss heading different factions.
PMK focuses on issues such as social justice, caste-based reservations, and development for marginalized communities, while also having a vocal presence in Tamil Nadu politics through its strong grassroots support, particularly among the Vanniyar community.
