The Communist Party of India (Marxist), commonly known as CPI(M), is a major left-wing political party in Tamil Nadu, the state unit of the national CPI(M). It was formed in 1964 following a split from the Communist Party of India (CPI) over ideological and political differences. CPI(M) in Tamil Nadu has its headquarters in Chennai, with P. Shanmugam serving as the current state secretary.

The party is rooted in Marxist-Leninist ideology, advocating for the rights of the working class, peasants, and marginalized communities through socialist principles. Historically, CPI(M) has played a significant role in Tamil Nadu's labor movements, agrarian struggles, and leftist politics. It has strong influence in certain pockets of the state, particularly among the working class and agricultural laborers.

Tamil Nadu's CPI(M) faces specific challenges regarding the state's Dravidian political identity, Tamil nationalism, and support for Tamil Eelam, differing somewhat from the national party line. The party has been critical of dominant caste politics and has supported social justice movements, though it has faced limitations in electoral success compared to Dravidian parties. CPI(M) organizes grassroots campaigns on labor rights, land reforms, and anti-caste discrimination, maintaining a visible presence in Tamil Nadu's political discourse.
